After a lifetime, I may have discovered that I have been observing God’s holy day on a wrong day. What do you think? Is Sunday the day of rest, the day we are to set aside to worship? What would you think if you found out you have been misled? Will you correct your mistake? What day is the Sabbath?

Many are familiar with the creation according to the bible. As the book of Genesis states, God created for six days and rested on the seventh.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light and there was light.” Genesis 1: 1 – 3

And that was the end of the first day. On the second day, the sky was created. On the third day dry land, seas, plants and trees were created. The sun, moon, and stars were created on the fourth day. Creatures that live in the sea and fly in the air were created on the fifth day. On the sixth day, God created animals that live on land and finally, created humans in the image of God.

When all this was completed God saw that it was good and rested on the seventh day. Resting on the seventh day makes it a hold day of rest.

Ten Commandments

We have all heard of the Ten Commandments. These are the rules to live by as given to us by GOD. They are simple rules and many of these rules can be found in modern-day society.

God memorialized these when He gave Moses the commandments as detailed in the book of Exodus and Deuteronomy.

Here are the 10 Commandments:

  1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me
  2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
  3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain
  4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy
  5. Honour thy father and thy mother
  6. Thou shalt not kill
  7. Thou shalt not commit adultery
  8. Thou shalt not steal
  9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour
  10. Thou shalt not covet anything that is thy neighbour’s

I thought it might be a good thing to list them here just to remind us of the rules God has given us to live by. Does anyone feel that these laws God’s laws are extraordinarily difficult to follow, yet many do not?

Fourth Commandment

As noted above the fourth commandment is “Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy”. What does God mean by this? Is this a day for God or is it a day for man?

Following Christ’s example here is what Jesus said about the Sabbath, “The Sabbath is to be a day of physical rest and spiritual rejuvenation. It is meant to be a welcome, refreshing break from our weekly labors, a time during which we must no longer be absorbed in our ordinary daily cares and concerns.”

Jesus spent the Sabbath in the temple. It was here He taught his Father’s teaching and performed miracles. We often forget that Jesus was of the Jewish faith, and Christianity did not exist. This is the primary reason why the two religions are so closely aligned.

So does God want us to stop everything? To me, it looks like what God wants is for us to do good on this day and make it a day of thanksgiving. Helping those that are less fortunate and continuing our education of God’s teaching. Learning from the bible.

We are not to do our ordinary work for we have six days to do what we need on this seventh day we are to rest and pay homage to God.

What Day is the Sabbath?

I was raised as a Roman Catholic with the pope as the secular leader. Supposedly following in the footsteps of Jesus. The Catholic religion is supposed to be the religion that Jesus started? Or did Jesus just extend the Jewish faith? Did Jesus teach a new religion a new way to follow God His Father?

In many languages across the world Sabbath actually translates to Saturday. And Saturday happens to be the seventh day. The day God has told us to set aside to worship and hold Holy. A day to rest and revitalize for the coming week.

God is very serious about keeping this seventh day. When the Jews were freed from Egypt and were wandering in the desert God sent manna to feed the people. He explicitly told them that He would send them double on the day before the Sabbath and they would need to collect twice as much as there would be no manna on the Sabbath.

So where or how did the day of worship change from the prescribed day set aside by God to a day set by man, Sunday. Sunday? Think about that.

Worship of the sun god

About three centuries after Jesus walked the earth and died on the cross for our sins a merger took place. The Jewish religion and the New Jewish Christ-followers had an ongoing battle. While to older sect had many man-made rules to follow the commandments the Christ-followers followed the teachings of Jesus.

About this time there was widespread prosecution of those holding the old ways. In addition, many new followers that were non-Jews began to follow the teaching of Jesus.  The new Christian Jews and the traditional Jews went underground to avoid being prosecuted.

At this juncture in history, the pagan religions began to merge with the new Christian religion. Changes began to occur. Many pagan customs were adopted.  One was the adoption of Sunday as the day of worship.

The pagan religions had many gods one such god was the sun god. When Christianity began to merge with these pagan religions Sunday became the day of worship.

In E. G. White’s book, World Crisis foretold, he spends a significant amount of time discussing the fourth commandment and how the entire world has been deceived. He discusses the history and how the pagan religions infiltrated the early Christians. Further discussion is on how the evil one is in control. By getting the vast majority of the world to worship on the wrong Sabbath day. All these people are not following the commandment of keeping the Sabbath Holy.

At the time I did not give it much thought until I just recently came across the same information in a different place. Sunset to Sunset God’s Sabbath Rest

If we continue to worship on a wrong day does it matter?

I personally found all this information overwhelming. For my entire life, I have been worshipping God on a wrong day. Surely God would forgive.

Jesus Christ condemned the practices of the religious leaders of His day, saying: “‘In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men . . . All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition” (Mark 7:7-9).

This was said to the religious leaders of Jesus’ time in reference to the restrictions that had been in place surrounding what could and could not be done on the Sabbath.

According to Christ’s own statements, “it is possible to worship Him in a way that does no good—that is, it is in vain. God does not give us the choice of how to worship Him—only whether we will worship Him according to His instructions or not. What, then, must He think of those who ignore His commands regarding the Sabbath, substituting instead a different day?”

What will you do?

Now that you have this new information what will you do with it? Have you been worshiping on the wrong Sabbath day?

Do you think God will forgive you? Will you abandon the pagan ways?

Conclusion

Has evil taken over the world? Have we all been living in sin? It certainly appears to me that we have been deceived. What else have we been deceived about? Easter? Christmas?

Are we all doomed? Is the bible the only true teachings of God? How do we know the translations are correct?

What do you think, let me know in the comments?
